Proper education is crucial to the furtherance of our art. Without passing the knowledge forward, or helping to develop the skills and discerning qualitative approach necessary to maintain high standards, the art will surely suffer, if not succumb entirely.
The goal of this Forum is to engage in the dissemination and discussion of well reasoned, accepted, established, and professional methods involved in Lutherie, and it';s attending issues. While there may not be a single “right” way to produce a given result, there are certainly numerous “wrong” methods. Dubious or spurious advice given, under any circumstances, will be called into question immediately, and probative action may be taken.
You need not be a full member of ASIA to participate in this Forum, though we encourage it but, if you';re not an ASIA member, you must register as a Forum member before posting privileges are extended to you.
Though probably one more than the other, you are here to both learn and to teach, for we all sit in either seat at any given time. Be sure however, that you are well qualified for whichever seat you occupy. A ranking system has been developed by the Forum';s advisory board, to offer help in indicating members'; levels of experience and expertise, and to aid the newcomer in determining the validity of a given member';s credentials. This is not necessarily an official “A.S.I.A. certification”, but should serve to offer guidance, and will be determined by the advisory board at its discretion.
We';re going to try to run this Forum in a relaxed, yet professional manner. Please use common, as well as professional, courtesy in your questions and answers… No pushing and shoving - be nice to one another, and try to keep your language under control if you can possibly help it.
Please respect the fact that there is probably a wide cross section of participants in the forum at any given time, from seasoned veterans to mildly interested passers-by, and that some questions may seem simplistic to some, while posing fairly complex issues for others. Remember that the ignorance of a newcomer deserves the same amount of respect, as does the experience and expertise of the recognized professional.
Please refrain from gratuitous vulgarity, sexist remarks, or comments of a political or religious nature. There are places on the web for all of these subjects; this is not one of them. There is a “general topics” area where you may post photos of your dog, discuss the integrity of your brake pads, or ask for help in deciding between that bass boat and the big screen plasma TV, but keep that stuff out of the Lutherie discussions. Most of us are here because we';re serious about the craft.
Please use the posting of photos sparingly, and only within the context of the discussion at hand. If you simply want to show us your latest creation, we have a free member';s gallery for just that purpose, and you may direct discussion participants there.
Please do not post solicitations to sell materials, parts, or services within discussions. If you are a legitimate supplier, please support the site by buying an AD, or a sponsorship. If you are an individual seeking to sell a personal item or items, find or become an apprentice, or locate materials or parts for sale or trade, please use the “classified” section. Commercial URLs are allowed within a post if pertinent and helpful to that discussion, but gratuitous attempts at redirects or hijacks will be removed.
These rules and guidelines may be modified as needed at any time. Complaints of a technical nature should be forwarded to Paul Dempsey. Those of a management or policy nature to Bill Moll.
Thank you. And now, enjoy!
Bill Moll
